International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) is investing in rural people in Malawi, as a way of empowering them to increase their food security, improve the nutrition of their families and increase their incomes. Since 1981, IFAD has supported 14 projects and programmes in Malawi for a total of US$350.5 million, benefiting approximately 2 million poor rural households. Currently, IFAD’s $450 Million investment is guided by country strategic opportunities programme (COSOP) 2023-2030 which presents IFAD’s investment strategy in the country which aligns with the SDGs and Malawi 2063 pillars on agriculture commercialization and industrialization. The COSOP’s overarching goal is to contribute to rural poverty reduction through the empowered participation of poor rural women, men and youth in the sustainable transformation of agriculture. Transforming Agriculture Through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) Programme is poised to making good progress having started on exactly the same note in its first year of operation. Obviously not an easy ride considering the dynamic operating environment that was characterised by a wave of a cyclone that preceded the deadly Freddy – not to mention the COVID pandemic. Through the strong commitment of dedicated, youthful but energetic Programme Management Unit and involvement of the receptive communities and beneficiaries, TRADE is quickly becoming a household name and brand for fostering rural transformation through mutually beneficial partnerships in value chains commercialization.
